Egyptian Mummy Beads
Egyptian Mummy Beads
In ancient times people of all ages adorned themselves in beads. Those who could afford precious gems were few so the use of readily available "crafting" materials was a necessity. These earth toned "mummy" beads were made of quartz sand kneaded into paste which was rolled around a straw reed, cut into thin heishi discs or longer tubes then fired and strung into intricate netted jewelry and clothing designs. These beads became known as "mummy" beads when most excavated tombs where discovered to contain them. At that time personal processions were few to common people and they were sent on their journey with the items they cherished in life. These beads are reproductions circa 1940's made in the exact manner as the ancient originals. In pastel tones of turquoise, sage green, terra-cotta, sunflower yellow, sky blue, coal and burnt umber. Each strand is 8" long and contains approx 100 beads, these beads are very small and lightweight.. Each bead is approximately 1/8" diameter x 1/16" width. These beads are not uniform in size or shape, each is unique. Incorporate them into your artwork or make exotic earrings to wear!
