I have always considered myself to be a student.  Whether I found myself sitting in a classroom somewhere in academia, ninety feet under the sea, sitting at my art table, or just taking in my surroundings and learning about another culture, I am always learning.  I find that my brain craves knowledge no matter how trivial and that I thrive when I'm being challenged.

This piece, "The Philosopher", was originally created for a Relics & Artifacts® advertising campaign within the current issue of Where Women Create.  However, "The Philosopher" was born from the inspiration I find in learning.

Every item within the confines of this shadow box symbolizes some element of learning.  The brilliant rays from the Dresden focal point inspire brilliance and that sometimes elusive "AHA!" moment.  The periodic table from Prima's "Salvage District" symbolizes academia.  The gears remind me of the machinations within our own minds and souls, turning, grinding, and always working together and in sync to further our mental and spiritual growth.

The tiny vials serve to remind us that chemistry, both literal and figurative, is a crucial element within our intellectual journeys because without chemistry to provide the fuel of inspiration, where would the motivation be to learn?  The patina finishes prove that learning is timeless.

And then behold!  The aged, cracked, and wise "Philospher's" visage, complete with monocle and the constant perplexed look that often accompanies any kind of learning, proving we are never too old to learn.

Being a part of this creative world has opened my eyes and as cliché as it sounds, broadened my horizons.  I have had to learn new methodologies as well as brush up on the old ones.  I've also found myself back in the world of academia and my hope is that "The Philosopher" will help light and guide my way should I ever feel like I'm lost in the dark creatively or academically.
