"Brave and the Personal Meaning of A Song" with RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Ambassador Monica Downing

I remember the first time I heard the song that inspired me to make this piece, "How Big Is Your Brave?" by Sara Bareilles.  The words just spoke to me and got under my skin and all I could think was, "YES!  This is so uplifting and amazing."  Then I saw the video and all of these people doing things that made them feel brave, free from whatever anyone else thought, free from the fear that had been holding them back.

I have also seen a video with this song showing cancer patients, smiling, dancing, singing the words while in the midst of probably the biggest battle of their lives.  The words are so honest, encouraging, uplifting and also challenging, challenging the listener to "say what you want to say, and let the words fall out."

Face your demons and be brave.  Being brave means so many different things for so many different people.  I think being brave is a lot easier said than done.  I think it’s a very personal battle that we all face in some way, at some time.  For me, there have been many times in my life when I have had to be brave. I haven’t necessarily wanted to but I HAD TO because my life depended on it.

I made this piece as a symbol for anyone who has had to stare fear in the face and be brave, no matter what the reason. The butterfly represents the freedom being brave brought to my life.

For anyone who is struggling through something, whether it be personal, medical, or anything else, I hope this piece inspires you and gives you hope.  My hope for you is that this piece and the words attached to it  give you the courage to be BRAVE.
