"Memories of the Ocean" with RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Ambassador Monica Downing

Living in Arkansas now, I rarely get to the coast. I grew up inland from San Francisco and my grandmother lived in the city so we would go visit her on a very regular basis.  She would take us down to Fisherman’s Wharf for sourdough and clam chowder. We would have fish 'n' chips and watch the seals on the lower piers. The sounds and smells of the pacific were always just so fresh and wonderful and very much a part of my childhood.

We would vacation with my father’s family, a bit farther south, at Pismo Beach. We would go for two weeks every year during clamming season. We stayed in a hotel that was right on the beach with instant access to the ocean and all the magic the high tide would leave behind.

My most favorite memory is when I went with my son on a school field trip to the ocean. The tide pools from that trip really inspired this piece. They were so magical and each one was filled with something different. Tiny little crabs, beautiful sea urchin, starfish, it truly was beautiful.

The Bohemian Jewels remind me of the sunshine dancing on the water as the creatures below did a dance of their own.

My son now lives in Virginia, and every time I go see him, we go to the beach together This piece will be a constant reminder of that magical day at the ocean with my son, along with my childhood memories of the ocean.
