RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Guest Ambassador Snapshot | Cat Kerr
I am super excited to share up we have Cat Kerr, a beyond crafty, kind and gifted soul, joining our Ambassadors in 2016 as a bi-monthly RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Guest Brand Ambassador!! I'm quite sure you have seen her amazing work around the land of Stampington as she is a regular in being published in their magazine issues.
Cat Kerr is a Mixed Media Artist/Instructor that lives in Central Florida with her husband, two kids and two fur babies. She works with a variety of mediums and especially loves to mix multiple mediums into one project. She currently teaches online and at art retreats around the country. Her work has been featured in numerous publications such as Somerset Studio, Belle Armoire Jewelry, Cloth Paper Scissors and many more. She has also been very fortunate to be featured on THREE Stampington magazine covers.
I probed into the creative vibes of Cat and here is our Q&A session together.
What fills your time when you are not creating?
I'm a momma first so that fills up most of my time. My kids are older, 14 & 18, but the after school activities, clubs, and practices keep me busy! I always say, I'm an artist in the in-between spaces of my life and I'm very thankful for those moments ... I create 15 minutes at a time. In between folding laundry, mixing spaghetti sauce, waiting in the car loop, and every second I can squeeze in a few moments.
What are your favorite materials to use when you create?
I especially love wood, metal, fiber, and resin, but there's one thing my pieces cannot do without...and that is "words". Words complete my pieces.
Where do you find inspiration for your art and how do you stay inspired?
I get inspired in unlikely places. Some of my favorite materials that inspire me are found in the aisles of my local hardware store. I always find something to use in my art in the roofing dept., plumbing dept., and in the gardening dept. I also love spending time in the baking dept. of my local craft store. I stay inspired by working on multiple pieces at a time.
What is your signature style?
This is something I struggle with because I like to work on so many different kinds of projects (jewelry, assemblage, fiber work) and because of this I feel like my work is scattered and without a specific style. A couple of months ago, one of the editors I work with contacted me and she said someone had posted a photo of one of my projects and wanted to know if the piece was available. She told me..."I knew it was your work right away"…and that led me to believe that maybe I do have a look. My hope is that I design happy and thoughtful art.
What is something your friends probably don’t know about you?
Most of my online art friends don't know that I'm an introvert. I'm shy and prefer to listen than talk. As you might imagine, this is something that I struggle with when I teach. So why teach you ask, well, I do it because it scares me and it's important to me to do things that are scary. The older I get, the bigger the urge to continue to try to live outside of my comfort zone. So if you ever meet and I seem a little shy...heehee...just know I'm trying to be brave.
If you could meet with with anyone, living or deceased, who do you feel you could spend hours in a chat over a cup of tea/coffee?
I would love to spend time with the poet Mary Oliver. However, instead of chatting over coffee, I would prefer to go for a nature walk with her just to walk and be in the family of things. I love many of her poems. They have inspired multiple pieces of my work. Wild Geese is one of my favorites.
Wild Geese
You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert repenting
you only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountain and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely.
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
What is your favorite quote?
"One day you finally knew what you had to do, and began." ~ Mary Oliver
What is your best tip for those new to RELICS & ARTIFACTS® product?
My tip for those new to RELICS & ARTIFACTS® is to offer the question I ask myself when I first approach a RELICS & ARTIFACTS® project..."How can I use these in an out-of-the-box way and what mediums, other than paint, can I apply to them?" Asking these questions helps me to look and discover something new.

RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Ambassador Snapshot | Monica Downing
We are super excited to welcome another uber talented soul to join the RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Brand Ambassadors! Monica will help us kick off 2016 next month in creating some amazing projects on the team. Sandra scouted out Monica's amazing art around the social media and we are thrilled she is joining our all things relics addiction. Of course, you know the drill around here....we ask what cranks the creative mojo and Monica delivered on our Q&A.
Monica is a California girl living in an Arkansas world. Her husband's job relocated the family to northwest Arkansas and she really loves it there. Monica loves making art and has always been a creator. She loves to see the outcome of mixing different mediums. Mixed media art is her LOVE. Monica loves inspiring people to try new things and think 'outside-of-the-box'. Monica works full-time and makes art whenever she has spare time. She is very excited to be a part of the RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Brand Ambassadors and the amazing journey to come.
What fills your time when you are not creating?
I work full-time as a trucking dispatcher. I love my job where it's fast paced, crazy busy and where I can talk to people from all over the country every day. Also, I love spending time with my husband and my kids, our 2 mini doxies, and riding our custom Harley Davidson trike.
What are you favorite materials to use when you create?
I love using anything that will create texture and dimension. Modeling paste is one of my go to materials. Also, I use lots of stencils, flowers, and metals.
Where do you find inspiration for your art and how do you stay inspired?
Love [the word itself] is a big inspiration for me. The happiness it brings to my life and the pain that it can bring. Also, I find a lot of inspiration in my fellow artists, Pinterest, and the amazing products that I get to work with in my art.
What is your signature style?
Shabby grunge. I love creating beautiful things with an edge to them. I love hearts, tiaras, and butterflies (really, anything with wings).
What is something your friends probably don't know about you?
I am a huge super hero she geek. I love everything Marvel! I have a collection of female super hero and villain dolls. Also, I've seen every Marvel movie to date (at least 10 times)!
If you could meet with anyone, living or deceased, who do you feel you could spend hours in a chat over a cup of tea/coffee?
I never had the chance to meet my Gramma Mo. She died when I was a child. I would love to sit with her and just listen to her tell me about her life.
What is your favorite quote?
"With Brave Wings She Flies." ~ Source Unknown
What is your best tip for those new to RELICS & ARTIFACTS® product?
Don't be afraid to try something new with the relics. They are just so many endless possibilities with these products. All of the pieces mix so well together and I believe anything goes in creating with them.

RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Ambassador Snapshot | Wendy Morris-Saponaro, Ambassador Team & Social Media Coordinator
Hello all! I could pull the modesty card but I plead the 5th. I've had my Ambassador snapshot sitting in the Muse draft for a few weeks and here today to share up my self interview with you. I'm not only an Ambassador but also beyond honored to be asked by Sandra Evertson to lead the team of Ambassadors from the start as the Ambassador Team and Social Media Coordinator.
I am always inspired by things around me and make time each day for art....living in the motto to “find inspiration everyday everywhere”. When I am not creating, I am usually jotting down ideas to create later back in my art studio. I have a strong passion for the arts, lots of creative spirit, and fearless in working with new products and techniques. I have been published several times in print and online scrapbook magazines, featured multiple times on the Paperclipping Roundtable podcast, a class contributor for Studio Calico, and several manufacturer design teams including Prima Marketing Inc. My niche of art lies in the scrapbooking arena, however, I venture into the mixed media world with touches of jewelry making and home décor art.
What fills your time when you are not creating?
I work full-time as an Audit Manager. Yeah, go figure. My right brain vs left brain is always in constant motion considering my paid profession is night and day opposite vs the arts. I typically travel about three weeks out of the month with my work. Most of my travel these days is domestically in the Southern states of USA. However, in the past, I used to travel a lot internationally all over Europe. However, my true passion is the arts and will always be strong in my heart. Many ask me how I juggle so many tasks but honestly I’ve always been a multi-tasker, highly ambitious, and overachiever.
What are your favorite materials to use when you create?
I hoard, breathe, and inhale stamps. From rubber mounted stamps to acrylic stamps, they are my true love. I cannot count the number of stamps in my stash. I’ve purged many stamps and some how more find their way home with me. I could not live without my 'go-to' ink, Ranger Archival Ink in Jet Black. It is truly the best of black inks and perfection for stamping.
Where do you find inspiration for your art and how do you stay inspired?
As an artist, I am always on the lookout for inspiration. All sorts of inspiration – texture, colors, packaging, billboards, catalogs, magazines, music - the sprinkling of subtle references to the people I encounter and the moments I experience on a real and daily basis. I keep my handy Midori Travelers Notebook with me all the time to jot down my inspiration from title work to catchy phrases to pivot a project once back in my studio.
What is your signature style?
The ‘element of surprise’ all in the details! I cringe at the thought of setting myself into a set mold as vintage or modern. I want to break the mold and combine the two in one project! Typically, my projects will include an ‘element of surprise’ where the observer will take a second glance and see details not captured in the first glance. Perhaps my profession as an auditor in being finely tuned to details flows through my art in the details of capturing the mood, colors, and textures in my art. Some of my projects are very clean and minimalist. Other projects I create are involved with lots of texture and techniques. However, I always strive to bring the details into my projects to really ‘take you there’ in emotion and depth.
What is something your friends probably don't know about you?
I come from a strong line within my immediate family with an innate talent to draw. My father, mom, older sister, and I can draw. I LOVE to draw portraits/people. I should really blow the dust off my drawings and share up around here, eh?!
I took an advanced art studio class, just for fun, as an elective in university aside from my business major. The art professor asked me why I was wasting my time majoring in accounting instead of pursuing an art degree. Then, I answered that I don’t need an art degree to be an artist. True story. I suppose accountants and auditors are not supposed to be artists too. So, perhaps I'm classified as a rarity.
Also, I studied classical piano for 12 years (starting at the age of 6) and love love love live orchestra music. I love to close my eyes when I play the piano because truly the classics 'take you there' in an intense and powerful way.
If you could meet with anyone, living or deceased, who do you feel you could spend hours in a chat over a cup of tea/coffee?
Jane Austen. All of her literature completely wraps around my inspiration. I have been known to watch on repeat her films 'back-to-back' while creating. Perhaps it’s the era, the language, the conversation but I am completely absorbed in her period of time.
What is your favorite quote?
"Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” ~ Steve Jobs
What is your best tip for those new to RELICS & ARTIFACTS® product?
Leave the fear behind! Don’t feel you need all the bells and whistles to make an elaborate piece of art with the RELICS & ARTIFACTS®. Just choose simple paints, relics and create! Easy peasy! The relics are truly like a magic within themselves to work with any medium. Leave intimidation at the door and go for it!

RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Ambassador Snapshot | Debby Anderson
With this next Ambassador, her bright and bubbly personality shines through even though I have yet to meet her in person. Seriously, after my first few online chats with her, I knew she was a classy sassy soul and add to that as the epic queen at soldering when you check out her art! I warn you to prepare yourselves to see soldering taken to the next level in her projects below using RESINS & ARTIFACTS®. She solders on the resin! Yes, ON the resin. I can't help but smile when I see her headshot below that shines full with sparks of happiness and a spirited soul.
Check out my sweet and soulful interview with Debby Anderson.
Debby Anderson is a self-taught metalsmith, jewelry designer, and mixed media artist. Debby works from her home studio in San Francisco, California. She started her company, Romancing the Bling, seven years ago with a focus on jewelry design. Her beautifully ornate handcrafted pieces have been published in the prestigious Jewelry Affaire magazine and featured on the Today Show. Debby teaches jewelry workshops in the Bay Area and across the United States, as well as popular artist retreats hosted by Vivi Magoo (Texas & Tuscon) and BABE (Bay Area Bead Extravaganza) held in Oakland, California. Debby is on the faculty with Artful Gathering Online Retreats and offers two online workshops each year. She has three DVD workshops available to students. Debby's product line, Vintage Romance, has also been sold in Michaels stores.
What fills your time when you are not creating?
Spending time with my two amazing sons, as well as the the rest of my family! I have to admit that I wish I had more time to spend with them as my artistic life does not allow for much time off. I love traveling to share and teach with my students! Also, I love to read, attend flea markets, and spend time with my girlfriends!
What are you favorite materials to use when you create?
I have many favorite materials I use in my work as a jewelry designer, metalsmith, and artist. One of my favorite techniques is to start with a single piece of wire. I love to shape, forge, and harden different gauges into focal pieces while soldering with an iron and/or torch. My second favorite material to work with is Apoxie Sculpt Clay. Many designs include a combo of metal and clay. My designs are usually embellished with vintage gems, spiritual imagery, and medals.
Where do you find inspiration for your art and how do you stay inspired?
I am inspired by various time periods in history ranging form the Renaissance through the Art Deco era. I love incorporating religious icons and French themed embellishments to replicate jewelry, relics, and images from the past in my own design aesthetic.
What is your signature style?
Intricate and feminine with an 'old world' artistic aesthetic. It is important when creating that I use high quality materials and apply finishing techniques at each step so that my pieces replicate a fine piece of jewelry from the past.
What is something your friends probably don't know about you?
Hmmmm....this is a hard one as I am pretty much an 'open book'....ha!
If you could meet with anyone, living or deceased, who do you feel you could spend hours in a chat over a cup of tea/coffee?
This is easy. It would be my soulmate and late husband, Harvey. Often, I feel him with me. I know he would be proud that I have worked hard to overcome the grief from his passing 18 years ago. While working hard to reinvent myself over the past 7 years, I would like to chat about how I have become quite the passionate artist.
What is your favorite quote?
"Enjoy the little things in life for one day you will look back and realize they were big things." ~ Kurt Vonnegut
What is your best tip for those new to RELICS & ARTIFACTS® product?
Don't 'over think' when designing and creating....I always say there are "no rules, nor mistakes in art". If your result does not make you happy, remember there are more opportunities to create with endless inspirations.

RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Ambassador Snapshot | Louise Nelson
After having the honor of working alongside this next Ambassador on the Prima Marketing Inc. Design Team, I knew she was a perfect fit as a RELICS & ARTIFACTS@ Ambassador. Give her beads, give her paper, give her gesso, ok, just give her any art medium....and this girl will always deliver (I'll pause while you check our her project below. Insert "jaw-to-the-floor".). She is truly an inspiration not only in the arts but in her full-time profession as a nurse.
Let's visit the 'land down under' for an interview with Louise Nelson.
Up until 10 years ago, Louise considered herself not at all crafty or artsy, for that matter. Louise enjoyed furniture restoration and DIY home decor. However, she ventured further than that. In 2005, Louise began to scrapbook and in the the last 10 years has developed a distinctive style that is an elegant mix of 'negative space' and art mediums. Louise considers herself fortunate to have designed for a small variety of both Australian and International manufacturer design teams during this time. Also, Louise had project publications and feature articles in both Australian magazines and Somerset Memories magazine. In recent years, Louise has developed a love of mono printing, stamp carving, painting, and enjoys perusing these arts in her spare time.
What fills your time when you are not creating?
As boring as this sounds... WORK! I do very much feel like all I do is eat, sleep, and work LOL! Ha! But I SO love my job and the people I work with, so it is all GOOD!
What are your favorite materials to use when you create?
At the moment? Hm, that would be texture mediums, wire, chipboard, beads anddddddd RESINS!! Ha!
Where do you find inspiration for your art and how do you stay inspired?
Inspiration is everywhere! Seriously! I also love to read home decor magazines for color inspiration. Color coordination is not my strong point and if I had a choice, I would create everything in black, white, and metallics. Ha! There are several favorite art/artists that I get a lot of inspiration from but especially fashion designers, print artists, abstract collage artists, and Neo-Expressionist artists.
What is your signature style?
Simple white space with a 'devil is in the details' approach.
What is something your friends probably don't know about you?
Hmmmm, not sure I want to share ha! Okay, I dislike wearing shoes and if I could do the barefoot thing all the time, I would. Oh, and I am handbag tragic!
If you could meet anyone, living or deceased, who do you feel you could spend hours in a chat over a cup of tea/coffee?
Please could I stretch that to 3 people??? Definitely fashion designer, Alexander McQueen, artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, and artist/designer Beatrix Ost.
What is your favorite quote?
This is one of many that I love, "Being creative is absolutely magical...and it's ever changing." ~ Carla Zampatti
What is your best tip for those new to RELICS & ARTIFACTS® products?
Well, I will be honest. I had not used the product until I created my tag (see below). So, I am a newbie to RELICS & ARTIFACTS®!! Ha! So, my approach was to let go, experiment, and have fun!

RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Ambassador Snapshot | Kimberly Cochrane
I'm having a major girl crush on our next Ambassador revealing up today. Seriously, this woman can rock the antiques + rock the jewels. Can I get an amen shout out after you check out her beyond incredible project below?! Get ready to catch your breath. GASP. Further, she is proof that being an artist is naturally deep within the blood as she is a self-taught artist.
I'm crazy happy today to share an interview with Kimberly Cochrane.
Kimberly is a self-taught artist and avid antique collector/dealer. She grew up in a small town in Eastern Oregon but now resides in Boise, Idaho. Kimberly lives with her fiance, Patrick, and their 'child', Sophie (a 3 year old Yorkie). Kimberly knew from a young age that she would be an artist. She had a very artistic upbringing as her mother, Gail Lackey, is a one-of-a-kind doll artist. Kimberly's mother has always been a huge inspiration and supporter of her art! Kimberly loved creating assemblages with discarded antique and vintage jewelry so much that in 2010 she opened her online shop, Madonna Enchanted. Although her main inspiration is jewelry, she also loves altering clothing, making unique religious inspired tassel bags, painting furniture, and creating collages and shrines. Kimberly believes that life is too short to waste it doing something if you are not passionate about it. She hopes that through her art she will inspire others to find their own creative passion.
What fills your time when you are not creating?
There really is not a time when I am not creating. If I can not physically create something, I am creating it in my head for later. For the time when I am not in my studio, I travel about an hour from where I live to help my brother and mother take care of my 91 year old grandfather.
What are you favorite materials to use when you create?
I LOVE anything that sparkles so I use lots of rhinestones!! Also, I love antique and vintage items. Anything that has a past and some character. Further, I will use antique fabrics, lace, metallic trim and velvet...LOVE me some antique velvet!
Where do you find inspiration for your art and how do you stay inspired?
I pretty much live in my studio so I surround myself with the things that inspire me. I create jewelry, so of course, I have lots of vintage and antique rhinestone necklaces, beads, pearls, old brooches, and cameos. My true love is antique religious items! I have a collection of old prints, paintings, religious medals, shrines, crosses, and statues that inspire me. Also, magazines and books are very inspirational. Where Women Create magazine is one of my favorites! When I need an inspirational boost, I go shopping LOL! I LOVE going to antique stores, flea markets, and thrift stores!
What is your signature style?
I have a very eclectic style, at least I think so, so I'm not sure what you would call it...I like a little bit of everything! When it comes to my jewelry that I create, I would lean more towards the French Victorian religious style.
What is something your friends probably do not know about you?
I would have to say they probably do not know that I love scary movies and Halloween is my favorite holiday!
If you could meet with anyone, living or deceased, who do you feel you could spend hours in a chat over a cup of tea/coffee?
I have not really thought about this one...but I would say that I would love to meet with the nuns from the late 1700s to early 1800s. The religious art that was created during that time like meerschaums and shrines were absolutely beautiful! I would love to find out about the creative process.
What is your favorite quote?
"Create what you love and is in your heart not what you think is going to sell." ~ Source Unknown
What is your best tip for those new to RELICS & ARTIFACTS® product?
Create away! There is no right or wrong way to use these FABULOUS pieces! The possibilities are absolutely endless!!

RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Ambassador Snapshot | Milagros C. Rivera
Over the next few days, we are diving into the creative minds of our talented Ambassadors to find out what makes their creative souls tick tock and spark.
I'm thrilled today to share an interview with Milagros C. Rivera.
Milagros is from the sunny island of Puerto Rico. She grew up among seamstresses and artists, so it was natural for her to gravitate to the arts. When her daughter was born, she decided to open a scrapbook store and thus continue a next generation interest in the arts. Her work reflects her passion for all kinds of crafts, jewelry, sewing, and collaging. She considers it really hard to choose just one artistic passion! She loves the way this world has evolved into mixed media to give her the opportunity to work with so many exciting mediums.
What fills your time when you are not creating?
Sleep...hey, I even create in my kitchen!!! LOL, I love to drive around the island to secret spots, quiet beaches or up the mountains for relaxing views with camera in hand, of course.
What are your favorite materials to use when creating?
Pearls, mother of pearls and stones. I love the shine on them, the cold, heavy feel of a stone in your hands. The fact that they are real speaks to me!
Where do you find inspiration for your art and how do you stay inspired?
The classics, antiques, old timeless pieces and fashion runways inspire me. I connect with nature a lot. Flowers, leaves, tree trunks, they hold magic to me and the sound of water makes me reconnect. I guess all of that helps me stay inspired!
What is your signature style?
Classic romantic, yet sometimes shabby.
What is something your friends probably do not know about you?
I don't think they know how much I enjoy creating jewelry or creating a costume from scratch. I'm very skilled with the needle and can draft a pattern for whatever pops in my head!
If you could meet with anyone, living or deceased, who do you feel you could spend hours in a chat over a cup of tea/coffee?
I would love to sit down with Don Luis A. Ferre, an entrepreneur, philanthropist, politician, musician and art lover. He died in 2003 at 99 years old.
What is your favorite quote?
"In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different." ~ Coco Chanel
What is your best tip for those new to RELICS & ARTIFACTS® product?
Attack with reckless abandon! They are all so easy to adapt, even with no mediums on them they are statement pieces on their own. Buy what speaks to you whether it's Milagros, Intaglios, or maybe classy chandeliers and just experiment. A simple coat of Prima Color Bloom Spray or a single swipe of Prima Mica Powder will take the relics to another level!
