According to legend, Europa was the epitome of feminine beauty on Earth. Zeus once saw her on the seashore of Phoenica and was so captivated by her he fell in love. He took the form of a white bull, approached her, she climbed on to his back and he carried her away. The whole continent of Europe took her name. Her story was so popular it has been depicted in many ancient ceramics pieces and coins. It so touched the Renaissance painters that there were many pictures inspired by her myth.
