Captivating scenes unfold in these ancient pictographs. Mysterious robed people go about their daily lives in a world that existed long ago. Artisans captured the environment they lived in depicting parties and gatherings, ceremonies and events, romantic couples and even loved ones. Intaglios just like these were collected by eager tourists in the eighteen hundreds making the “Grand Tour” of Europe. The word itself is Italian, from intagliare, which means to engrave. My favorite piece in this group is the beautiful maiden with the outstretched arm and flowing hair. 6 piece set with flat backs.
