We are absolutely thrilled to announce that Heather Thompson will be joining our in-house team of RELICS & ARTIFACTS® Ambassadors. We have been watching, or more like enamored with, Heather's works for some time now. Her classic style with a whimsical flair make her work easily recognizable while maintaining an element of uniqueness that keeps things approachable, welcoming, and absolutely inspiring. Let's grab a cup of coffee, kick up our boots, and get to know a little about what makes Heather tick.
"Hello! My name is Heather. I am a mother of two beautiful young children, Olivia and Maksim, who are the inspiration for a lot of my art. I live on a slice of my own heaven with my husband and the kids. Along with my gardens, ponds and crafting, I have been a trauma nurse for 17 years. I am passionate about my family, my art and my nursing.
I have dabbled in arts and crafts through out my life, and started scrapbooking when my daughter was born in 2008. However, I really dove into the depths of crafting and mixed media in 2014 when I discovered textures, dimensions, mixed media and alterable art."
What fills your time when you are not creating?
"When I am not creating in my studio, you can find me outside creating in my gardens. Alongside my supportive husband (both in the studio and outside), Adam, and the kids, we enjoy time outside either on the water or out in the yard. I often bring my studio outside to the gardens to create in my own serene environment."
What are your favorite materials to use when you create?
"My favorite materials are mediums. I truly believe that a good solid base is the start to any piece of art. For me the more texture and dimension, the better."
Where do you find inspiration for your art and how do you stay inspired?
"I find inspiration all around me, whether it’s watching the kids play in the yard, walking my gardens, or finding a rare oddity while out and about. I look for the beauty in all. A lot of my ideas come to me while I am trying to sleep and recover from my stretches of nights at work. And when my creativeness is lacking, sometimes it is better to just walk away, talk a breath, and the creativeness will return. Sometimes, it just needs a vacation to become rejuvenated. Just hopefully not a permanent one!"
What is your signature style? "
To be honest, I don’t have a signature style. My style depends on my mood and my environment at the time, or perhaps the crazy ideas that pop into my head. I enjoy all genres of art from shabby to vintage to steampunk. Maybe some day I will have a style that defines who I am and my art, but presently I am a free spirit who learns from any situation regardless if it's a failure or a success."
If you could meet with anyone, living or deceased, who do you feel you could spend hours in a chat over a cup of tea or coffee?
"I would have to say Florence Nightingale. Nursing is in my blood. I could grab either tea or coffee and enjoy hearing stories of the way nursing used to be compared to the nursing of today. After being in nursing for 17 years and seeing how it has changed in the time from when I started, to hear what nursing was like in the mid to late 1800s and the advances since then would make for an interesting afternoon."
What is your favorite quote?
"'There is freedom waiting for you on the breezes of the sky and you ask, 'What if I fall?' Oh but my darling, What if you fly?' --Erin Hanson"
We look forward to the fun, inspiration, and creativity that Heather is sure to bring not only to our Ambassador team but to all of you as well! Please be sure to check out her blog, Heather's Creations: Inside and Out, and to leave a little welcoming love for her.
