On my recent trip to Europe I saw many frescos, mosaics and murals. I am drawn to the beauty that they hold, whether it be the color, texture or composition. The history of these pieces always leaves me with an “awe” factor and I am amazed at the age of these and how they have stood the test of time. The mosaics I saw in the many mosques of Turkey gave me the inspiration for this piece.
I started out using the Marrakesh art stamp, pressing it into the clay. It gives a good impression with so much detail. A little turquoise acrylic wash and then more detailed painting on the tiles gave me the look I was wanting - an aged one just like the mosaics I saw.
I then glued the tile to the top of a wooden journal I had and added some black pages inside for journaling or photos. Binder rings with sari silk ribbons finished off the journal book. Perfect size for a small photo album.
